During their school career the children will be formally assessed in line with national expectations in these ways:
Reception Class - On entering school a baseline assessment is done of children's strengths and areas for development. this helps teachers and other early years practitioners to make sure that children are given adequate challenge and support to enable them to make the best progress they can during that year. At the end of the year children are judged against many of the early years standards and if they succeed in the identified areas then they are judged to be at a 'good level of development'. This assessment is used to help support children as they move into year 1.
In Year 1 all children across the country take part in the phonics screening check. this is an indicator of early reading and is helpful for teachers to see whether their children require additional phonics support. We know that phonics is one indicator of early reading skills and wider literacy. Children who do not pass the phonics screening check are tested again in year 2.
At the end of year 6 children undertake their standard assessment tests (SATs) these take place in May every year and are carefully administered in line with national guidelines. Tests take place in maths, reading and spelling, punctuation and grammar. These tests are marked externally and the results of these are shared with schools, parents and children prior to the children leaving the school.
Every year we publish our end of Key Stage assessment results.
